Jump In Writing CurriculumJump In Writing Program by Sharon Watson
Jump In is a wonderful new middle school writing course that overcomes the reluctant writer’s fear of writing by using a friendly, approachable style that makes the text easy to read. This course can also be used by high school students who have had little practice in writing, or who are reluctant writers. Short, workable exercises, incremental daily lessons, and non-threatening word counts will help students to write opinions, persuasive papers, and many types of expository papers, descriptions, narration, and poetry. The instructor/parent section includes what to look for in an assignment, how to give a grade, how to help the student proofread, and a one-year writing program called “10-Minute Writing Plunges.” These are daily writing prompts designed for fun and interest. This two-book set includes a student workbook and a teacher’s manual.

Although written for Middle School students, high school students who have not had a good introduction to essay writing, will also benefit tremendously from this excellent course. I can't speak highly enough of this program - it is just what I was looking for as a homechool mom and almost every mom who looks it over when we travel to conventions takes it home! Yes, it has that much appeal. My favorite pat of Jump In is the concrete guidance it provides for grading your child's work.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Do you have a creative child or a child who needs a purpose for writing? This program may be perfect for you! A language arts curriculum for grades 5-12. By the end of this course, your student will have written an entire novel with excellent style, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The skills learned will transfer to the next writing project - no matter what subject. This course can be completed in one year or one semester. For high school students, it is designed for a full year’s credit in English composition, but it is also perfect for upper elementary and middle schoolers who need a break from workbooks and a reason to write.

Story Starters Karen AndreolaStory Starters by Karen Andreola
This wonderful book is designed to awaken the dormant writer in your child. It has just the right ingredients to inspire even the reluctant writer or the student who has experienced discouragement. A story starter, along with its accompanying picture, provides a very buoyant jumpstart for creative composition. The student is encouraged to write freely, with zest, with boldness and far more abandon than he may be used to, because he is unencumbered by the usual constraints of more formal exercises.
With Story Starters children write like they've never written before! Often a budding writer is suspended in the middle of an intense situation, and then is faced with the question: What happens next? This is his cue to expand and embellish the story as much as he wants. The action-packed stories and dramatic 19th century illustrations were designed especially to appeal to boys. Other stories are calmer. This is a big book only because choices are plentiful. Thumb through the pages to pick ones you like. Whether calm or exciting, each story reflects Biblical virtues. The characters are uncommonly brave and kind-hearted, gracious and generous, variously demonstrating respect for elders, patience, fortitude, or quick wits. Grades 4-12

Write With the Best, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
This wonderful program uses the writing of excellent authors to teach descriptive writing skills and encourages the reading of these great works.   Volume 1 covers nine different writing genres in an easy to use format for Grades 3-12.  A huge bonus is that it be used with all children in a family at one time.  Both volumes are non-consumable, so you can use it with younger children when they are ready to work on their writing skills.  All passages referred to for the student to read and observe are provided in the combined student/teacher text.
Write With the Best teaches students how to write each genre while learning literary critique, some grammar, proofreading, and listening comprehension skills.  There is little teacher prep and the day by day lessons can be completed in 15-45 minutes.  Each lesson builds skill upon skill to ensure mastery.  I really like that the writing assignments can be used with other subjects for reinforcement, such as science and history.  Parents are assisted in evaluating their child's writing with a complete grading criteria and helpful answer key.  There is also a "How-To-Write Guide", enabling parents to continue to teach effective writing even after the curriculum is completed.
This program is packed with solid instruction and the inclusion of additional literary passages provide for continued use through the years as your child matures in their abilities. The information on writing techniques, and what makes a good writer will serve as a source of reference for years to come! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
