English From the Roots Up by Joegil Lundquist
Since the majority of our words are derived from Latin and Greek roots, it makes sense to spend some time learning these roots and the words they form.  By concentrating on Latin and Greek roots, our children benefit in several areas including reading, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension and standardized testing.  This program has students creating their own cards - or you could use a notebook like we did - to write down the root being studied and words containing this root, along with their definitions. In addition to the root and derivatives for the student to copy, each page also includes teaching notes and suggestions for introducing each word.  For the root "tele" there is a paragraph telling about a battle between the Persians and the Athenians and how that gives us the modern word "telethon".  The explanations themselves have often provided spark that encouraged further study of topics ranging from photography to the Roman mile!  Each volume covers 100 different Latin and Greek roots, which we have chosen to cover at the pace of 2 per week. Rummy Roots and More Roots
Learn Greek and Latin roots in a fun and stress-free way with this unique vocabulary building card game. Players also learn the meaning of the roots but often don't realize it until they are quizzed later! Beneficial for many different learning styles, the game rules are easy to understand and there are four (4) game versions included. Those new to learning the Roots begin with a Pre-Rummy game before moving onto the regular or challenging levels. This is a favorite at our house - begin with Rummy Roots and then move on to More Roots for more vocabulary-building practice! Ages 8-Adult
