From My Heart to Yours - Articles to Encourage and Inspire!
It happens every year about this time…the homeschool "blahs". Well, it happens to ME anyway - maybe you don’t have any idea of what I’m talking about. I’m pretty confident that I’m not the only homeschool mom to go through this "phase" each spring. In fact, on several of the email lists I’m on, many moms have been sharing their struggles with discouragement.
For me, it starts with realizing that our "school year" is going to be coming to an end soon. Even though I believe my kids are learning all the time, I can’t seem to get out of the school schedule that ran my life for 12 years! So I start thinking about all those things I had hoped to accomplish this year with my kids…and I realize that many of those dreams are not going to become reality, at least not by the end of May. This is also the time of year that I tend to let my guard down and get involved in too many activities. Busyness takes over and we find ourselves getting less accomplished. Many of the activities are good, but are they the BEST for my family?
This week I have purposed to take my worries about academic achievement, discouragement over unmet goals, and dreams left unfulfilled straight to the feet of my Heavenly Father. As I choose to turn it all over to Him, He is gently showing me the many ways my boys have grown this year. He reminds me of the things we DID accomplish! Best of all He reminds me that there is a season for everything and I have many more years of planting before the time of harvest arrives. Of course, He also shows me areas that I need to work on such as learning to say "no", self-discipline and realistic goal setting.
I am so thankful for God’s provision of homeschooling friends. Last week when I was "at the end of my rope" it was such a blessing to be able to call a fellow homeschool mom and "vent". We are all going to have "those days" -- that’s when we need each other the most. Remember, a listening ear, encouraging words and maybe some chocolate are just a phone call away!
So, as your school year begins to wind to a close, I pray that you will be reminded of God’s loving care for you. It is God who has called you to this task of homeschooling -- it is a high calling. He who called you is faithful to guide, strengthen and encourage you for the task at hand!
